Psalms 19:1-6 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
My wife bought me a telescope a few years ago. I'd tried and tried to use it, but there must be some secret to using it that I'm unaware of. Well, tonight there was this weird blinky light that I was sure was some kind of supernova or something equally impressive. Turned out to be a light on a nearby radio tower. Since, I was already outside I figured I should try to look at something. Miraculously, I somehow got a look at Mars. Since I was sure it was a fluke, and would never happen again I stood there staring at it for nearly an hour. As I sat there, I couldn't help but think "My God made that."
Job 26:7-14 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it. He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end. The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud. By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. (the constelation Draco) Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand? We're told here that the Earth and heavens are just part of the power and mystery of our God. We don't even understand a fraction of that!
We all learned in Sunday School 101 that God made all that is. Likewise, I'm sure at some time we've probably all seen pictures of the stars and planets. I've never really doubted either one was true. I don't know why, but actually looking for myself made both seem more real. We often hear about how true Christianity is a religion of faith, of the unseen. However, we are told in Amos 5:8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name: You can keep your stigmata, and your tree stumps that look like "the virgin Mary", because my God is made manifest in all of creation.
So, the next time you feel scared, alone, or just need a little encouragement, go for a walk at night. Then look up at the stars and think "I serve the one who made that, and I call him 'Father'."
